Werner was awarded the Harold Galasko prize for the best law student as well as the Hugonis Grottii Memoriae Sacrum (the Grotius medal) for the best final year LLB student. Werner served articles of clerkship with attorneys Bowman Gilfillan Hayman Godfrey Inc in 1993 and 1994 where he was employed in the commercial law and commercial litigation departments of the firm. Werner was admitted as an attorney of the High Court in 1995. Werner joined the Special Projects Division of French merchant bank Societé Generale, housing its structured and corporate finance activities, in 1995. Within this division, Werner was responsible for overseeing the legal aspects of all transactions structured by the division and as such was involved in a number of cross border mergers, take-overs and acquisitions as well as a number of rights issues and listings on the JSE. Werner was admitted as an advocate in 1996. Werner has an interest in commercial and banking related litigation. He has extensive experience in exchange control related matters as well as futures contracts, the South African Futures Exchange and financial instruments.
